Buddy Bench Project

On Monday, Limerick Mental Health Association proudly launched the very first Buddy Bench at Robert O’Byrne Park, a small bench with a big purpose: to encourage connection, conversation and support in our community.

The Buddy Bench Project aims to create safe, welcoming spaces where individuals can signal their need for connection in a simple, non-verbal way. Clearly marked and placed throughout Limerick city and soon the county, these benches serve as quiet invitations for conversation, understanding, and support, reminding us all that no one has to face their struggles alone.

Back in 2023, we saw the demand for mental health support skyrocket, with the number of people seeking our services at Limerick Mental Health Association rising from 860 in 2022 to 5,563 in 2023. It made us pause and ask: how many more are still struggling in silence, too afraid or ashamed to reach out?

That question led to the birth of the Buddy Bench Project, inspired by a similar initiative in Belfast and brought to life through the incredible collaboration of multiple agencies, community groups, and Limerick City and County Council. We’ve identified 10 key locations along the River Shannon for these benches, creating spaces where connection, conversation, and support can naturally happen.
